Chairman's Message - May 2008

Captain G R Gopinath
Executive Chairman,
Deccan Aviation

Dear Guests,

May is the month of summer breaks and vacation time. Holidays are a much needed break from our hectic work schedules and the sight of children with parents and grandparents in tow, making a beeline to board flights adds to the of merriment of the season.

On our part, we offer you the widest connectivity and access to a host of holiday destinations. From Kullu, Shimla, Dharamshala, Leh in the North to Ooty, Coonoor, KodaiKanal (near Coimbatore), Andaman and Nicobar in the South; there are restful and adventure destinations galore.

Speaking of holidays, one of our contributors returned from a visit to the Periyar tiger reserve and recounted an unusual tiger conservation program being run by the forest authorities.

Tiger Trail, as it is called is a partnership between the Forest Department and former poachers. What is particularly impressive is that the forest department has engaged in a series of trust building exercises with poachers and local communities to help preserve the forest and its exotic wildlife. The engagement has helped curb instances of tiger poaching in the region and helped those resorting to hunting and smuggling work out new livelihoods. India is dotted with spectacular forests and incredible wildlife and one truly wishes that similar conservation efforts become the norm.

The Periyar reserve is a tiger haven and a paradise for wildlife aficionados. In case you are planning a trip, the best time to visit is in April and May. The Kerala tourism Board website helps out with detailed travel itineraries and other information.

At Deccan our objective is to not only have country wide presence but also to empower the consumer in small towns and dusty hamlets. We firmly believe that access to air tickets goes hand in hand with the growth of air travel. While offering affordable air travel is in our DNA, we are forever exploring new ways and means to make air travel a reality beyond the big cities. Our partnership with India Post, I believe has the potential to make this possible.

The 150 year old postal service provider has woven itself into the very fabric of the country. Even today in areas where there is no access to phones; and internet and credit cards are unheard of, post offices are the life line. The Deccan – India Post tie up makes available flight information and bookings at internet enabled post offices. People who don’t use credit cards, the internet or mobile phones can walk into a neighborhood post office and buy a plane ticket.
The tie up was first launched in Karnataka in 500 post offices and has been received well in the state. Last month we took this partnership to Tamil Nadu in 247 post offices and in the coming months the service will become available in Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

While we are looking forward to going more places with India Post, I wish you enjoyable holidays ahead.

Thank You for flying Deccan.

Captain G R Gopinath Executive Chairman, Deccan Aviation
